OpenURL
What is OpenURL?
OpenURL links allow you to check whether a publication cited in the bibliography of an article is referenced in your library's holdings.
Simply click on the icon which appears to the right of a bibliographic reference to send a query to your library's OpenURL resolver. This will open a new window. For a book or journal you may then have the option to find out if your library holds a copy, and where you can find it using its shelfmark. For online journals you may have the option to check whether the abstract and/or full text is available to you via your library's subscription, and if so, it may provide you with a link to it.
I don't see an icon to the right of bibliographic references
This is because your library has not registered its OpenURL resolver with us. Please see below for instructions outlining how a library can register its resolver with us.
FAQs for Librarians
Are all OpenURL resolvers the same?
No. There are a wide variety of resolvers available, depending upon a library's demands.
Why should my library register their resolver with you?
This enables users of the Dictionary to see which of the publications listed in the bibliographies of the articles are available via their library.
How does my library register its OpenURL resolver for the Dictionary?
Librarians should contact their sales reps directly or email onlinesales@palgrave-usa.com in the US or librarians@palgrave.com in the rest of the world to register their OpenURL resolver.
We require the following information:
- The resolver address (a URL given to the library by its chosen OpenURL service provider) e.g. http://edina.ac.uk/balsa/resolve
- The resolver icon (usually in the form of a URL, which refers to a .gif image file)
e.g. http://resolver.ukoln.ac.uk/openresolver/sfx.gif
